About Coal Marketing Company (CMC)

Coal Marketing Company Ltd. (CMC) was established in January 2003 by shareholders Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Glencore. In May 2006 Xstrata acquired Glencore's 33% share and replaced them in the consortium. CMC is the exclusive marketer for coal produced in the vast Cerrejón complex, located on Colombia's Northern Coast.

The core section of the complex, Cerrejón Norte, was originally a joint venture between Intercor, a subsidiary of the Exxon Corporation, and Carbocol, owned by the Colombian government.

The present consortium acquired the interests of both original partners, plus a number of smaller mines in the adjoining area, in a process which culminated in 2002. The integration of all of these assets is now complete and, through its marketing partner CMC, Cerrejón has moved closer to its main markets in Europe, the Americas and rest of the Atlantic.

Sales have grown from 18.5 million tonnes in 2002 to 25.5 million tonnes in 2005, and are expected to grow over 30 million tonnes by 2007.

Coal Marketing Company is a private limited company registered in Ireland. A copy of our annual accounts is available upon request.
